Ak iLL Bio Ak iLL is a teacher, poet, emcee, and producer determined to bring hip hop back to its former self. He has been crushing mics since '92, performing both hip hop and spoken word. A product of the golden era of hip hop, he draws his influence from many of the early pioneers, including Public Enemy, BDP, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Common (Sense), Brand Nubian, Gangstarr, BCC, and countless others. Today, he is focused on keeping the culture true to its roots, maintaining a social and political awareness in his work. His current influences come from both the DMV local area and from a far. Little Brother (RIP), Diamond District, DTMD, The Left, Kev Brown, Kenn Starr, Kaimbr, and the whole Mello and Low Budget movements, as well as cats like Elzhi, Black Milk, Royce, Shad, Aesop, and Phonte have all helped contribute to his growth and development as an emcee. Even more importantly, the local artists: Apogee, Makeshift Deluxe, Telepathy (LAB), Kenjii, the Coalition 301, CM aka Creative and DCom, Sean Toure, Raida Wreck, Maurice Daniel, Ullnevano, and the homie Che Rock continue to inspire his work the most. Hailing from Silver Spring, MD (DMV), Ak iLL cofounded Universe City Press (UP), a hip hop collaborative featuring his brother from another mother, Apogee, in 2003. They have been performing and making music together since. Their debut EP, 'Celestials', was a selfreleased project that introduced their unique sound to the local scene. UP is set to release their follow up EP, 'Global Warning', in Spring 2015. Ak iLL went on to feature on a handful of collabs released over the past few years. He recently released a solo mixtape chronicling his work, 'A View to Ak iLL', in 2014. Currently, Ak has teamed up with FOCUS records and DJ iLLogik on a collaborative venture they call 'Open Optiks'. With Ak's rhymes, iLLogik's cuts, and lots of dope boombap production, the project will definitely epitomize hip hop at its best. They plan to take it back to the essence: two turntables and a mic....
